Berlin this year has been blessed with its full share of divine sparks of joy. Seldom has the world witnessed such elation over newly won freedom — what an overwhelming experience, not only for Europe but for all mankind! The "collapse" of the Wall truly is cause for rejoicing, and we wanted to celebrate together with our neighbors — musicians from the Soviet Union and the USA, from Britain and France, from Berlin, Dresden and Munich. And so I have invited them all to a "festival of jubilation". May this performance of the Ninth Symphony — the Harmony of the World resounding in Berlin — play a part in ensuring that this joy, "bright spark of divinity", will never end.
