Lesson 17: Contractions. Nov 3rd, 2005
On this show we talked about contractions and “ing” dynamic verbs versus stative verbs . Here are some points:
Contractions:
Gimme= give me, gonna= going to, gotta= got to, init= isn’t it, kinda= kind of, lemme= let me, wanna= want to.
“ING” verb forms:
Point 1: Stative verbs talk about conditions which continue over some time, e.g., like, love, hate, hear, see. We do not usually use these verbs with “ing”.
Point 2: We can use stative verbs (only sometimes) in its “ing” form when they talk about a temporary condition, or something with a definite beginning and end. Look at the differences between the following sentences to understand better:
‘Her perfume smells like flowers’.
‘Why are you smelling the pencil?’
‘he said he felt the class was boring’.
‘How are you feeling today?’….’I'm not feeling very well actually’.
